Just so we know

"Consumers have musical choice? What musical choice? In or society we choose only from what we are given to choose from, and that choice is determined by 5 major media corporations who control the exposure outlets that consumers depend on for their entertainment." -Christopher Knab

"Record companies like to make money, and that is their only goal. They do not care about the content that they sell - they care about maximizing their profits. It is because of this that I hate record companies with the same passion that I hate venture capitalists. The record companies do not try to foster a creative environment which rewards musicians who serve their respective niche, but create an environment which attempts to market a small amount of music to the largest audience possible. It is more profitable for the record company to sell a few decent records in bulk than to have a vast array of cult hits that sell decently." -Numair Faraz

"This is all about greed, something the record/entertainment industry has honed to a science. Dusty LPs, the artists, they don't care! But if there's a nickel on the floor, look out; they'll cut your throat for it because they 'need' that nickel. Artists get paid a small sum, then the capital boys live off them like kings until the next big thing, then it's over. So it's not about the music you see it's about their nickel. That's why you can't have any sharing of long gone music, because there might be a nickel there and they want it. They wouldn't give to a charity if it wasn't showing them handing over a cheque or had a building named after them so why would they be charitable on long lost material. Strangely they even tried to stop resale of used CDs because there was that darned nickel they wouldn't get. May all the 'industry suits' have children who hate them." -Jannx

BLUE MITCHELL - GRAFFITI BLUES (1973)

It was through various straight Jazz Blue Note albums that I got to know Blue Mitchell. Later, in the early nineties, I came across the track 'Dorado'. A sparkling, very funky piece of music and I was surprised to find out that it was Blue Mitchell again. 'Dorado' turned out to be from the album 'Graffiti Blues' and in '93 I bought the CD. The original vinyl contained five tracks, had the artwork I use here today (the cd booklet is simply ugly) and for its digital counterpart, four titles were added: 'Alone Again', 'Where It's At', 'Funky Walk' and 'Blue Funk'. I wonder what it is with 'Alone Again'. The JB's also recorded it... Anyway, 'Graffiti Blues' is a hot album. Mitchell gathered an impressive group of musicians for these sessions (Joe Sample, Joe Beck, Joe Farrell, James Madison, etc etc) and track after track simply kicks ass. Bonus cuts 7, 8 and 9 (arranged and conducted by David Matthews) were all recorded a year later and have a more raw, JB-style sound. Track 6, Gilbert O'Sullivan's 'Alone Again' was added from the original session and is a regular ballad. I can play this album over and over again, simply because it is so damn funky. It's a must for jazz DJs. You can hear the joy these guys must have had recording it. The CD has been long out of print, and can be hard to get by, so let's enjoy it now at 320 Kbps! I'm curious about your replies, folks.

I kinda stole the idea of posting an out of print CD from Smooth, since he recently posted the impossible to find CD 'Black Octopus' by Paul Jackson. Go get it, it's a superb album!

It doesn't count where the music comes from: LP, CD, MC, MD or any other kind of music storage. The Main thing (or question) is: Comes it from the heart? Is it funky? Contains it a groove?? And in this case: IT IS Funky and groovy and comes from the heart and, and, and.... It's a real damn good kinda music, which all "Baby Grandpa" readers will love, as I do. Thank a for sharing. I didn't know this gem until today.

Jazzsoulman's got it right ON!!! It is all in the music...regardless of format. You know, if you scope out most music shops these days it is even difficult to find any back cataloge on CD...the formats are really going through a nightmare these days. Me: I take what I can get!!!! Thanks, brother.

Hello Baby Grandpa - this is a *hot* album so thanks for posting it and yes, the cover of the CD re-issue doesn't deserve to be displayed here :-) I have some more Blue Mitchell albums to come up at my blog (among them the "Last Tango = Blues" album, which comes close to this one), so plenty of stuff to sink your teeth in. So the music needs of our visitors are taken care of - here and elsewhere...

Exactly Smooth. You hit the nail on the head. Can't wait to see those Blue Mitchell albums you got for us!

Hey, Simon666! Good to see you again. For a sec I thought you came by for another one of your fabulously extensive discographies. ;-)

Glad you enjoy the rip!

Peace,

BG

Simon666 said...

Well, I did just do a Walter Bishop Jr, discography, but didn't do a sideman one this time, otherwise this album would have been there :)
Text to be displayed anyway if you like ..

Simon666 said...

"Text to be displayed" was meant to say "check it out" :)

Baby Grandpa said...

Haha... I knew it had to be something like 'check it out' when I saw that! ;-)

And writing discographies must be incredibly labour intensive, so you're forgiven that you didn't do a sideman one this time! ;-)

Peace,

BG
